School Story:
I had Dr. Hamm twice, and he remains the most memorable teacher I ever had. Because of him and his class, I developed a love of reading books.
I still recall a lesson from Mr Soslow's history class; he told us about the "driving of the golden spike" when east and west were joined by the railroad lines. He showed us a picture of two trains meeting and everyone celebrating. At the center of the picture, hanging on to one of the trains, was a man holding an American flag. Then he showed us a copy of the "real" photograph; in it, the same guy was hanging onto the train but in his hand was not a flag, but a bottle of whiskey. In 9th grade I wasn't ready to understand the message, but 40 years later, I think about that picture and what it tells us about truth, and propaganda, quite often.
The greatest part of going to Central High School for me was meeting guys of so many different backgrounds- races, religions, ethnicities. Had I gone to my local H.S., I would have lived a much more sheltered life. CHS expanded my world.
